Meteora
In a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, monks settled on these 'columns of the sky' from the 11th century onwards. Twenty-four of these monasteries were built, despite incredible difficulties, at the time of the great revival of the eremetic ideal in the 15th century. The Monastery of Varlaam became the second after the Monastery of st. Stefan, which we managed to visit during a day trip to Meteora. This active monastery was received on behalf of the monk Varlaam, the first settler who climbed the rock in the first half of the 14th century and built a small temple dedicated to the Three Hierarchs. It is also known that the monk Varlaam was a contemporary of Saint Athanasius of Meteora, who founded the monastery of Megala Meteora.

The balcony castle of the Varlaam monastery has a height of 40 m. An inscription is visible on it, where the names of the creators and the year of creation are marked — 1536
